Carpenter Ant
Carpenter ants are throughout the Northwest and may look like any other ant in appearance without the trained eye. They vary in size and color (black, red, brown) and may have wings. Winged ants inside a structure may indicate the nest has been in place for 2 to 3 years plus. Most carpenter ant nests are built in areas of present or previous moisture damage and become inactive(dormant) during winter months. Piles of fine saw dust (Frass), holes in wood, ant sightings, and possibly hearing them during times of dead silence (Sounds like someone eating potatoes chips in the distance) may be signs of a carpenter ant infestation. As the season in Northern Ontario is short for the carpenter ant ( 4 to 5 months) structural damage is most times minimal and may take years to surface. As professionals every carpenter ant job is different and challenging as nests are not seen readily.
